Trataka (candle gazing)
Trataka is one of the six Kriyas (cleansing practices) mentioned in classical texts.
Trataka cure diseases of the eyes and remove tiredness.
It also increases concentration and is an excellent preparation for meditation.
Practice Trataka in a dark or dimly lit room. Light a candle and place it on a stool or a low table so that it will be about level with your eyes.
Sit on the floor in a comfortable mediation posture three to four feet away from the candle.
Gaze at the flame steadily without blinking or moving your eyes. After a while, your eyes will begin to water, and you may experience distorted vision.
This is natural, keep a steady gaze and resist the urge to blink.
After 30 to 60 seconds, close your eyes and rest for 30 seconds.
Repeat at least 3 times. At the end of the last round, cup your hands over your eyes and stare in the soothing darkness (this is called palming)
